Sun, 04/11/2010 - 1:30pm

Please join Yes We Can Tippecanoe and the Tippecanoe County Democratic Party as we host a 2010 Strategy Session with Organizing For America (OFA). This is a chance for volunteers, supporters and activists in our community to meet and talk with OFA staff and be a part of creating a legislative and electoral plan for 2010. After this 90-minute Strategy Session, you should leave with a common understanding on local election strategy, where OFA is going in Indiana generally, and how local organizations can work together to take the next steps of action and spread the word to others. The hosts welcome you all—active volunteers, former Obama campaign volunteers, state and county Democratic Party members, staff and volunteers of other Democratic campaigns and members of activists and partner organizations. Please bring a friend, some ideas and your plans for action in 2010! We can’t do this without you!

Klinker's Bill Assisting Universities in Building Bonds Passes

Submitted by Webmaster on Thu, 03/04/2010 - 10:24pm.

HB 1297, authored by Sheila Klinker, passed the House and the Senate today by unanimous consent and is on the way to Gov. Daniels for his signature. While the bill was stripped of many of its provisions, but it retains the central provision that allows universities to issue debt bonds based on anticipated pledged contributions. “Instead of waiting for all the money to come in, Purdue can start getting bids now before the costs go back up. In the long run it is going to save the state money and the university money,” said Rep. Klinker. Congratulations and thanks, Sheila! You can read more here.

Negotiations Continue on School Budget Legislation

Submitted by Webmaster on Thu, 03/04/2010 - 10:14pm.

As the end of the legislative session looms (as early as midnight tonight), negotiations are continuing on HB 309, which allows schools the flexibility to spend money from various accounts to meet operating expenses; however, schools using this provision are prevented from granting pay increases. This legislation could impact school layoff decisions, such as those faced by TSC. It's pretty convoluted, but you can read more here.

Vote Centers Threatened

Submitted by Webmaster on Thu, 03/04/2010 - 9:15pm.

The continued use of vote centers in Tippecanoe County and elsewhere is threatened tonight by the uncertain fate of HB 1106. Democrats added a "no fault" absentee ballot provision to the bill which would allow anyone to vote using an absentee ballot. Currently voters wanting to vote by mail must meet one of 13 criteria. If the session ends tomorrow, as has been speculated, and the bill has not been voted on, the vote centers will disappear by the 2011 municipal elections. Party Chair Heather Maddox has encouraged citizens to contact state legislators to express their support for vote centers. You can read more from the Journal and Courier here.
